This is very exciting. In 1981 I started coaching in the youth baseball program in Newberry. At that time the programs were funded by the YMCA. The boys played in t-shirts, typically blue jeans and any old shoes they could find. I didn’t like my boys dressing in this fashion, so I asked a friend of mine Wayne Mason of Gainsville to help sponsor my team. He owned a Property Management Company in Gainsville and gladly paid for complete uniforms for each of the boys. Together he and I bought new equipment and made sure each boy that needed shoes and gloves had them. The boys developed self pride in themselves, as I had in each one of them. The team name was the Saints. The boys never knew Mr. Mason bought them their uniforms, but they showed their appreciation by winning the Alachua County Championship. Newberry Baseball has really grown. The single field we had was by the sink hole. I have a picture of my son Jason in a diaper standing on an old home plate that I had to replace. He played in the Little League program there and went on to pkay in the Minors for the Cubs and the Phillies. So many good momories we have of Newberry and Newberry Baseball. It is great that you have this opportunity to provide many, many more good memories.
